Born in the Mpumalanga province in 1935, South African artist Esther Mahlangu finds herself somewhere between contemporary and traditional art. Being one of few South African artists who have gained true international recognition, Mahlangu’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as Centre Pompidou and The Guggenheim Bilbao. In 1991 she was invited, as the first female artist, to create her version of the BMW Art Car alongside artists such as Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Jeff Koons.
The artist was portrayed in her home in the Mpumalangu province in celebration of the Eytys x Esther Mahlangu sneaker collaboration in 2016.
