Touko Laaksonen (1920 – 1991), better known as Tom of Finland, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. His homoerotic art can be likened to a contemporary iteration of the master Michelangelo. With exceptional skill and iconic imagery he robbed straight homophobic culture of its most virile and masculine archetypes such as bikers, cops, cowboys and seamen and turned them into proud monuments of gay culture.
In May 2018, Eytys and the Tom of Finland Foundation collaboratated on a unique snekaer design. To celebrate the collaboration, a campaign was created by contemporary artist and filmmaker Bruce LaBruce. LaBruce is himself a modern icon of gay culture, known for his multidimensional, and often controversial work in film, visual art, and theatre. In 2015, LaBruce was honoured with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from which all works have now become part of MoMA’s permanent collection.
